The Nike Air Max 1 Anniversary is back. After celebrating 30 years of the historic runner in 2016, the AM1 took a backseat to other popular models. Now, the beloved Anniversary iteration is back, and for the first time ever, in the original “Forest Green” color.
The Nike Air Max 1 Anniversary was a monster hit when it debuted in 2016. The silhouette was the closest recreation to the original pairs we have even seen from Nike, rebuilt from the ground up to mimic the shape and feel of the original. Since then, the Anniversary edition has been hard to come by, due to skyrocketing aftermarket prices and high demand. Luckily, Nike has more on the way, but not just any colorway, the forgotten OG.
Let’s go back to 1986 when the Air Max 1 made its debut. Runners around the world fell in love with the shoe’s lightweight and flexible construction, and, of course, the cushioning of the Airbag underfoot. The Air Max 1 launched in two colorways, University Red and Royal Blue, both of which are attributed as the “original”. However, there was a third. Released shortly after the others, in 1987, the Air Max 1 Leather retained the same color blocking as before but replaced mesh and suede with premium leather for a luxurious finish. The best part? They came with beautiful Forest Green overlays. Since then, the green Air Max 1 has never been seen again, save for odes to the original, like Parra’s famous “Chlorophyll” iteration, and one of our staff writer’s Nike By You customs. There was an opportunity to vote for a retro in 2015 in the UK, but it didn’t quite get the votes. Now, the Forest Green Air Max 1 is back, and better than ever, but it will likely not be available for long.

The latest colorway of Nike’s Anniversary Air Max 1 to surface online, in the cult-classic Hunter Green color scheme, has been rumored to release later this month, on July 30th, 2020. Built to be an exact recreation of the original, the Air Max 1 Anniversary comes with a price tag of $140 and has not yet been confirmed to release outside of Nike’s e-commerce channels.
