Nike’s retro archives are filled with some of the most interesting footwear ever released. This week, we got word that the laceless Air Kukini runner may be gearing up for a return in 2022, so today we’re taking a closer look at the retro racer.

The Nike Air Kukini originally launched in 2000, paralleling other legendary Nike footwear like the Air Presto. The Kukini was a stark departure from some of the Swoosh’s more popular offerings of the time, entirely shedding traditional lacing systems for a form-fitting neoprene bootie-style construction. The Kukini also provided lockdown by way of a thin plastic cage, web-like in design, that wrapped all over the topside of the silhouette, keeping the loose materials underneath in place while you ran. While the Kukini did receive a retro release in 2012, the most recent rendition came from Stussy in 2020, adding the Kukini’s signature plastic cage to the Air Spiridon in a new twist. Now, Nike is gearing up to revive the Air Kukini for 2022, rehashing the highly unique sneaker in all of its original glory.
