Nike’s Air Flight silhouette has been a popular piece of their basketball history since its debut back in 1989, and since then, has released regularly to much fanfare from Nike heads. This week, Nike unveiled a special new colorway, titled the “Planet of Hoops”.

The Nike Air Flight has remained a favorite amongst fans of the early Nike Basketball since its debut over thirty years ago, largely thanks to its resemblance to other shoes while maintaining its own unique qualities. To start, the Flight ’89 is built on top of the Air Jordan 4’s midsole tooling, oftern referenced as the quintessential Air Jordan sneaker. Next, the upper is constructed from smooth leather, and features some serious layering to achieve a bulky, sturdy design with plenty of eye-catching elements, like the jagged forward-facing wings, and the miniature Swoosh tucked under the collars. This week, a special-edition colorway of the Air Flight ’89 surfaced, which dedicates the shoe to a mythical “Planet of Hoops”. This is noted by writing on the tongue saying “The Court Planet of Hoops”, though it is currently unclear exactly to what this is referring. The special new colorway comes with plenty of added details, namely 3M reflective detailing for the Swooshes as well as the forefoot wing’s piped trimming. The midsole also features speckled GITD sections, which are repeated on the lacing eyelets as well as on the heels, which feature “PLANET” and “800165” embroidered on them.

Nike’s new special-edition colorway of the fan-favorite Air Flight ’89 has not yet been given an official release date, though they are expected to arrive on shelves sometime in the coming weeks. The “Planet of Hoops” colorway, featuring GITD and 3M Reflective accents, will likely release in limited numbers, and with a higher price point than the usual $120.
