Nike is almost ready to release their next Air Bakin retro, the latest in a string of iconic ’90s basketball shoe comebacks. Today a future colorway has surfaced, a multicolor “Tweed” look for Spring 2027.
The ’90s basketball scene is one of the best era in sneaker history. Nike was on fire at the time, so much so that they named an entire product line after various heat-related words. The full collection of sneakers included the Air Scald, Air Melt, Air Grill, Air B-Que, and the Air Bakin. The collection was later pulled from shelves, due to the fiery Air branding on each shoe, which the Council on American-Islamic Relations asserted that it looked too close to the name Allah, and Nike swapped out the custom logo for standard Air branding. The Air Bakin is one of the most beloved models from the line, associated with Tim Hardaway’s time with the Miami Heat. Designed by Eric Avar, the same footwear innovator who would work closely with Kobe Bryant on his signature line, the Air Bakin is in the queue for another retro release this year.
The Bakin has only seen a handful of releases since its launch in 1997. The high-top nubuck model released in 2007 for its ten-year anniversary, and again in 2014. The most recent drop came in 2023 in a collaboration with Supreme, featuring two colors. Now, Nike is poised to release the OG red, black, and yellow look this Fall, and it appears they have more releases for the model planned in 2027. Leaked images from today show a string of upcoming Nike products, the main pair in frame being a new Flyknit Runner for Spring. Hidden in the background and out of focus, keen eyes spotted a colorful take on the Air Bakin, which is said to be a “Tweed” version of the fan-favorite silhouette. The shoe’s distinctive upper is constructed in tweed textile, woven with a rainbow of thread colors to create the fabric. The rest of the shoe comes in black to highlight its multicolor panels, with a neon green Swoosh on the soles.
