Nike has been designing the MLB’s City Connect jerseys for several years now, and this Spring they are putting together a matching collection of sneakers. Today, the “Pirates” look has begun to pop up at retailers, with an imminent release.
Nike’s takeover as the jersey sponsor for multiple professional sports leagues has been a huge boon for the fan economy. The Swoosh has leaned hard into well-designed special edition jerseys that we actually want to wear, and this year’s MLB City Connect program is no different. Taking inspiration from local history and culture as well as past colors and uniforms from teams, the Connect series are some of the best jerseys we’ve seen in years. This season, Nike is producing special pairs of the Air Max 1 to go alongside these exclusive kits, dressed in matching colorways. After the Atlanta Braves‘ pair surfaced yesterday, the Pittsburgh Pirates’ matching sneakers have now appeared via Social Status’ raffles page. The look brings a black nylon canvas base to the AM1, paired with nubuck leather overlays. Gold detailing adorns the Swooshes, upper eyelets, and branding hits, while bold red laces complete the look.
