Vans, Inc. is an American footwear, apparel, and accessories company headquartered in Costa Mesa, California. Founded in 1966 as the Van Doren Rubber Company by Paul Van Doren, his brother Jim, Gordon Lee, and Serge D'Elia, the brand pioneered made-to-order vulcanized rubber-sole footwear from a single factory in Anaheim, California.
Founding model: Authentic / #44
The first Vans shoe — the Authentic (originally style #44) — was a simple canvas slip-on with the brand's signature waffle sole. Paul Van Doren's innovative manufacturing approach meant customers could walk into the Anaheim factory, pick a canvas color, and walk out with custom shoes the same day.
Skate culture foundation
Vans became the footwear of Southern California skateboarding in the late 1970s. The Era (1976) — designed with Tony Alva and Stacy Peralta — featured padded collars for skating comfort. The Old Skool (1977) introduced the iconic side jazz stripe — hand-drawn by Paul Van Doren as a design doodle, now one of the most recognized sneaker elements in the world. The Sk8-Hi (1978) brought the high-top cut. The Slip-On (1979) exploded into pop culture via Fast Times at Ridgemont High (1982) and remains a lifestyle staple.
The Vault and OTW lines
Vans Vault (since 2003) is the elevated product line featuring premium materials, limited-run collaborations, and OG '70s-'80s-era silhouette construction. Vault collaborations include JJJJound, Kith, Needles, Fear of God, Billy's Tokyo, Wacko Maria, and Noah. OTW ("Off The Wall") is a higher-end capsule with creative director oversight.
