Nike has often turned to New York for special releases of their Air Force 1, a staple of the city’s street culture. This year, the ’01 model gets a new look inspired by the metro tunnels and the subway rats who live in them.
The Air Force 1 has been a staple amongst New Yorkers for decades. Known locally as the Uptown, the basketball silhouette found new life as a casual model shortly after its release, and has been ever-present in Nike’s offerings for the forty-four years since. Over those decades, the Swoosh has released countless pairs as odes to New York City, most recently celebrating the Knicks’ NBA Championship with both ’01 and By You editions of the iconic silhouette. This week, we have an early look at a special new pair of the ’01 version, taking inspiration from the city’s subway system and its rodent residents.
One of the most famous New York sneakers ever is the “Pigeon” Dunk from Jeff Staple. This year, Nike is coming for their own crown with the “Subway Rat” edition Air Force. Similar to the pigeon dunk, this pair don the colors of a rat, using a warm College Grey shaggy suede to mimic the rodent’s fur, with muted Pink Glaze accents for the outsoles and an extended heel tab at the back of the shoes. Each pair comes with a special hangtag to complete the look, which borrows the yellow MTA metro card, replacing its usual branding with a Swoosh.
