Nike’s “Wheat” colorway originated in 2001, and has since become a fan-favorite every Fall. For three years running, the Dunk Low has taken up the mantle, with another pair slated to arrive soon.
The first edition of Nike’s Wheat theme to hit shelves arrived in 2001. Using the Air Force 1 Low as their canvas, the Swoosh colored the model in a smooth shade of wheat brown in a tonal application. Inspired by work boots and New York’s beloved Timberland boot, the look was completed with a semi-transparent midsole and black outsoles. The release was a hit, and has spawned many, many more iterations of the “Wheat” theme across a range of styles. Air Max 1s, Lebrons, Spiridons, and more, all of them have adopted the fan-favorite look.
In the last few years, Nike has taken strongly to their Dunk version of the wheat theme. Perhaps the most similar to the original, because they opted for tan midsoles and black outsoles, the Wheat Dunk has appeared each Fall for the last three years. Now, it’s rolling out once again, this time with some minute changes. Instead of a full nubuck leather upper, this pair mixes two cuts of suede for a multi-texture look across the upper. The new pair features a slightly more pale midsole, and two laces will come with each, one standard flat lace and a rope lace to mimic the work boot inspiration.
