In the late 1990s, Nike introduced Swoosh, a fictional superhero to act as a mascot for the brand. Now, they are celebrating their classic character with a special release of the Air Kukini ‘Swoosh Man’ coming soon.
Nike is gearing up to rerelease the Air Kukini, a turn-of-the-century running shoe originally created as part of the brand’s Alpha Project in the early 2000s. Featuring a form-fitting neoprene bootie and completely devoid of a traditional lacing system, the Kukini uses a web-like plastic cage to keep your feet locked in. This week, a new special-edition release of the sleek silhouette surfaced online, showing off a pattern of the brand’s Swoosh Man superhero they created for marketing purposes in 1996. The story goes that Nike spent $125,000 dollars creating a costume for the mascot reminiscent of DC’s Flash character, invoking the element of speed. This Air Kukini features that costume across the shoe’s base layer, while silver metallic overlays, black midsoles, and red accents complete the homage to the character.
