Nike is leaning into the history of the Air Force 1 as a basketball shoe and cultural icon this year. After many Kobe Bryant-related pairs, this week a new style for Lebron James has emerged, coming soon.
The Air Force 1 has been an essential piece of Nike’s history since its introduction in 1982. The silhouette marked a turning point for their basketball footwear, with its simple, timeless style transitioning seamlessly into street culture. Since then, the AF1 has retired from the court, but has frequently been used as an off-court canvas for NBA players to express themselves through limited-edition releases. This year has seen a resurgence in that category, particularly with Kobe’s Mamba themed pairs. Now, Lebron James is joining in on the fun.
The Kobe Bryant-branded pairs of the Air Force 1 we’ve seen this year have been special, but the new Lebron edition goes a step further. The look reworks the shoe’s simple midsole shape, mimicking his new Lebron 23 silhouette for a fresh take on the iconic low-top. The sole features semicircle cutouts at the heel and midfoot to subtly make his crown logo. The upper is constructed entirely from a glossy black patent leather, even adding leather laces for a premium touch. The laces add a gold dubrae at the toe for a final touch.
