Asics Corporation is a Japanese athletic footwear and equipment brand headquartered in Kobe, Japan. Founded in 1949 by Kihachiro Onitsuka as Onitsuka Co., Ltd., the brand took the name Asics in 1977 — an acronym for the Latin phrase "Anima Sana In Corpore Sano" ("a sound mind in a sound body").
Heritage
Onitsuka Tiger — the pre-Asics brand line — produced the first Tiger basketball shoes in 1950 and was the footwear worn by the US Olympic track team in 1968. The Onitsuka Tiger Mexico 66, released in commemoration of Mexico City's 1968 Olympic bid, is now a lifestyle icon famously worn by Uma Thurman in Kill Bill (2003). Asics continues to operate the Onitsuka Tiger sub-brand for heritage and lifestyle releases.
Gel technology
Asics's defining innovation is Gel cushioning — silicone-based shock-absorbing inserts first introduced in 1986. Gel is used in virtually every major Asics running silhouette: Gel-Kayano, Gel-Nimbus, Gel-Lyte III, Gel-1090, Gel-Contend, Gel-Saga, Gel-Quantum. The visible Gel windows on the Gel-Kayano and Gel-Lyte III have become as iconic as the brand itself.
Iconic silhouettes
- Gel-Lyte III — 1990 runner with split-tongue construction; still the most collaborated-on Asics silhouette
- Gel-Kayano — long-running premium stability model (since 1993)
- Gel-Nimbus — neutral max-cushion flagship (since 1999)
- Gel-1090 — 2001 runner revived as lifestyle in the 2020s
- GT-2000 — mid-priced stability runner
- Novablast — modern cushion-forward everyday trainer
Collaborations
Kiko Kostadinov has served as Asics's sportstyle design consultant since 2018, producing the GEL-Kiril, GEL-Nandi, GEL-Korika, and running collection. JJJJound's GEL-Kayano 14 drops have sold out instantly. Other notable collaborations include Cecilie Bahnsen (Gel-Kayano 14, Gel-Sonoma 15-50), Harmony Paris, atmos, Fieg/Kith, and Ronnie Fieg x Needles.
The broader mid-2020s running renaissance — driven by run clubs, TikTok "silver sneaker" trends, and Gen Z adoption of technical running silhouettes as lifestyle — has elevated Asics to one of the most culturally relevant brands outside traditional basketball/skate lineage.
