adidas’ push to include recycled materials in its products is ever expanding, and now features one of the first footwear recycling projects of its kind. Debuted in October, the Terrex Free Hiker ‘Made to be Remade’ returns in Core Black in 2022.
The innovation team at adidas has been thinking about recycling their shoes for several years now, actively developing a way to receive older, used product from their customers and revamp into an entirely new and wearable product. This idea first came to fruition in the form of a Speedfactory (RIP) concept shoe, fashioned from harvested spider silk, that could be broken down in your home via a bottle of liquid enzymes that would effectively ‘melt’ the shoes in your kitchen sink. However, they have taken an entirely different approach for the now consumer-ready ‘Made to be Remade’ program, which constructs sneakers out of recyclable materials, and invites you to send them back to adidas once you’re done where the rubber and textile portions will be ground down, cleaned, and refurbished into new textiles and EVA rubbers. The Three Stripes have already kicked off this program with the release of a full-Primeknit build of the Terrex Free Hiker, which has now surfaced in a fresh “Core Black” colorway for release next year.
