The adidas Samba and Predator are the brand’s most recognizable football shoes, each with their own unique history. This month, the Three Stripes is combining the two, adding Predator-inspired details to the Samba OG for a distinctive new look.
70 years ago, adidas debuted the Samba, a purpose-built indoor soccer shoe made from a leather upper with suede overlays and a thin cupsole for better feel and traction. While the Samba performed excellently in its intended use, the silhouette quickly became popular outside of the indoor courts, adopted by everyday wearers and skateboarders due to their supreme comfort and style. By the ’70s, the adidas Samba was a massive hit, and has remained one of the Three Stripes most popular silhouettes to this day. Then, in the ’90s, David Beckham happened. When he signed to adidas, the two created the Predator boot, an aggressive-looking cleat that would go on to influence hundreds of spinoff colorways and silhouettes, all paying homage to the GOAT. This week, the Samba is one of them. Dressed entirely in black leather, this version removes the Samba’s usual stripes, instead replacing them with the aggressive, claw-shaped versions from the Predator, cutting them from snakeskin for dramatic effect. The heel also features some jagged cut leather, a nod to the Predator’s original lifestyle iteration. Finally, the insoles come in red, complete with Samba branding in the Predator font.
