In 2004, adidas debuted Megaride, a new midsole technology built to compete with Nike’s turn-of-the-century Shox designs. This year, the Mega line is back, with a new silhouette called the Megaride AG coming soon.
Back in the early 2000s, performance technology was advancing rapidly, with major brands like adidas and Nike trying out some wild new concepts. In 2000, the Swoosh introduced Shox, new midsole system composed of spring-like rubber structures, with the idea of literally springing runners forward through their shoes. Shortly afterward, the Three Stripes introduced A3, a similar idea with a different design. Then, in 2004, adidas introduced Megaride, which used a series of hollow structures and stress points to provide a bouncy new cushioning for running.
This year, adidas has revived the Megaride technology, rolling out a number of classic silhouettes and adapting the tech to fan-favorite models like the new Predator Megaride style. This week, adidas has unveiled their first all-new design using Megaride, dubbed AG or Mega X for short. Unveiled by noted sneaker photographer @arab_lincoln, the silhouette features large pod-like structures underfoot, and a Y2K-era inspired upper, made from a mesh base layer and a series of synthetic and plastic overlays. The result looks good; the upper is stylish and brings a sense of motion to the shoe, while the huge midsole likely provides a ton of cushioning for casual, everyday wear.
