Review: adidas Climacool “Off White” is All Comfort and No Frills

On-foot look at adidas Climacool Off White

This Summer, adidas finally held a wide release of the new ClimaCool “Off White” — a laceless shoe entirely printed in their 4D technology. We’ve been wearing the slip-on model for a few weeks, testing out how the technology holds up when applied to an entire silhouette.

The adidas ClimaCool line has been kicking around since 2002, when the Three Stripes released the shoe’s original design. The model was then geared towards performance, offering runners a shoe that emphasized breathability by adding ventilation cutouts into the midsole, and using airy mesh panels for the upper. The Clima technology was largely a success, providing relief from sweaty dogs during hot Summer runs.

First launched over twenty years ago, ClimaCool has been a canvas for adidas’ ongoing experimentation and evolution in performance design. Prime examples being the Torsion bar that appears in many ’90s running shoes, and the Tubular line from the same era. In 2017, the Three Stripes celebrated fifteen years of ClimaCool, reviving the line with retro releases of original models, as well as adapting the tech to other models like the UltraBoost and a new silhouette dubbed the 02/17.

In 2018, adidas debuted 4D, a brand new technology produced through SLA 3D printing that offered durable, flexible cushioning at the cost of an immense price tag. The innovation was an improvement on their previous 3D-printed work, which used standard layered printing but was not nearly as durable. The 4D line is made from flexible resin and uses a lattice structure to achieve its unique look. Through the use of interwoven strands, soles can be altered to be denser in high-stress areas, while keeping the form light and flexible. adidas designers keenly observed this technology would be aptly suited for the ClimaCool line.

Late in 2024, adidas unveiled the next generation of ClimaCool, an entire slip-on silhouette made from their resin 4D lattice technology. The shoe released at the end of the year in small numbers, before finally arriving to the masses just in time for Summer 2025. We’ve had our feet in a pair for the last few weeks, feeling out the new design to see how well it works as an entire silhouette.

UNBOXING

Unboxing the new ClimaCool model is an experience on its own. Packed inside a standard blacked-out shoe box, the shoes come packaged in a sealed silver chrome bag emblazoned with the Three Stripes. There is no need for extra laces or paper wrappers to protect the shoes, they are ready to go right out of the box.

SIZING & FIT

Pairs only come in half sizes, so I had to go up to 10.5 from my usual 10, and noticed immediately they are still a little snug in the toes. While the material is flexible, they require a little bit of stretching to slip on, especially over socks though wearing socks is entirely unnecessary and frankly, not recommended. The front narrows quickly, but with regular wear the rubbery material has expanded enough to fit fine. Having worn 4D shoes before, the new model is still a bit of a shock to the senses. There are no insoles or extra materials separating feet from shoe, and you can feel the individual printed strands, but the sensation is actually similar to adidas’ massage sandals I wore as a kid.

COMFORT

Wearing the new ClimaCool shoes truly feels like stepping into the future. Once I got past the sizing and broke them in a bit, they immediately became a go-to sneaker sitting next to my door. The midsole features a denser latticework that provides a strong and stable platform, but also gives plenty of impact resistance and cushioning for moving around. The upper is thinner than expected, and the construction is focused on sweeping lines that move with the natural contours of a foot allowing them to expand and retract with you. Like any good Clima shoe, the ventilation is on point, allowing airflow around your feet that you can feel with each step. The material used has some friction to it, but does not irritate your feet like other bare foot sneakers might. Trips to the grocery store, brunch outings, and after work bar stops all felt like traversing the world in my favorite pair of house slippers. One fun bonus of the shoe’s shock absorption I noticed is that they are nearly silent on all hard surfaces.

With that being said, they are not a “go anywhere” shoe. Cleaning out sand after a trip to the beach was a bit of a chore, and passing through an unseen wet patch of grass left me with slightly damp feet and more cleaning to remove excess mud.

Overall, the next-generation adidas ClimaCool is a win for both the Clima product line and the Three Stripes’ innovative printing technology. The shoes are squishy and light, but still sturdy enough to bop around in for everyday wear, though I do not recommend them for anything more heavy duty than casual strolls. They will certainly be an essential part of my rotation for the foreseeable future, as I continue to test their long-term durability.

WHERE TO BUY

adidas just released their latest production batch of the 4D Climacool in July 2025, but pairs went quickly and are no longer directly available from the brand. Fortunately, they have a restock currently scheduled on their release calendar for July 20th, 2025. Additionally, select retailers like Fresh Rags still have limited sizes in stock. adidas has also created a Laced version of the model, which adds a tongue and traditional lacing system, releasing on July 15th, 2025.
