adidas famously produced a special sneaker for the West German army back in the 1970s, the BW Army Trainer. After its Hartcopy collaboration last year, the model is coming back for an in-line retro release for Spring 2025.
Back in the 1970s, adidas produced a massive number of trainer sneakers for the West German army. The silhouette was a simple low-top sneaker with indoor soccer tooling, and durable leather uppers. When the Berlin Wall fell in 1989, the national armed forces were no longer in need of the trainers, which left thousands of pairs lying around in warehouse, eventually sold off to the masses. This made the BW Army Trainer a cult classic, and its return this year is a welcome sight for collectors.
Last year, adidas teamed up with Hartcopy to release a limited-edition pair of the BW Army Trainer, which was a fan-favorite silhouette of 2024. Now, that appears to have been a soft launch for the shoe’s official return, which begins next week. The initial colorways of the shoe pay homage to the originals, with rich, premium leather paired with a suede toe cap and leather sock liners. One pair features an all-black build with gum soles, and the second comes in shades of white with the same gum sole.
