The Nike Air Max 1 has released in hundreds of colorways and versions throughout the years, though none is more beloved by fans than the original. This year, Nike is throwing it back to the original idea of the shoe with the Air Max 1 Tinker “Sketch”.
The Air Max 1 has been a mainstay in sneaker culture since it debuted in 1989. The silhouette launched a revolutionary new running technology: Nike’s Air Max. The underfoot cushioning has evolved numerous times over the past 30 years, turning into the current Vapormax and Air Max 720 versions. However, the fans’ love for the Air Max 1 remains the same, as does Nike’s. This week, a new colorway of the legendary silhouette has surfaced online, paying homage to the shoe’s creator, Tinker Hatfield.
The Nike Air Max 1 “Sketch” might be the most interesting colorway in the Tinker series yet, coloring the shoe to look like the Swoosh’s chief designer original drawings. The shoe’s leather overlays feature a custom printed pattern made to look like the etchings of a marker, painting the quarter panels in smooth grey and the Swoosh and mudguard in University Red. Some of Tinker’s notes are added around the shoe in his handwriting, while a signature on the heel indicates his work as the designer. The shoe’s outsole pattern and tongue logos look hand-drawn, while “SKETCH – Property of Nike Not for Resale” branding on the inside reinforces the “unfinished” nature of the look.
