Nike’s Air MAG sneaker from Back to the Future 2 has inspired tons of special releases over the years, including a fully functional pair in 2016. Now, the shoe’s iconic color scheme graces the Air Tech Challenge 2 for a new release.
Marty McFly’s auto-lacing sneakers from Back to the Future 2 immediately became the stuff of sneaker legend when the film released in 1989. The ultra high-cut silhouette appeared in a brief scene where Marty is introduced to the wonders of clothing technology in the far future year of 2015. The shoes, actually designed by Nike, didn’t require any laces, allowing the user to slip in and jump on their hoverboard at a moments notice. Nike made them a reality in the mid 2010s, just one year after the movie was set. Dubbed Adapt, the technology made a few more reappearences in different shoes before fading into the archives. However, the MAG’s iconic color scheme has stuck around.
This month, Nike is dropping another new take on the MAG’s signature color scheme, this time in the form of their Air Tech Challenge 2 model. The shoe was designed for tennis courts, and released in the same year as BTTF2. Famously worn by Andre Agassi, the ‘bad boy’ of tennis, the Challenge 2 has remained a cultural icon for decades after its release. In this new MAG-inspired take, the model dons a flat Photon Dust grey color for the leather upper, adding a Dusty Cactus teal accent around the lower portions of the model, and an orange to yellow gradient for the Nike branding to mimic the movies’ logo.

Nike’s upcoming release of a new Air Tech Challenge 2 colorway is scheduled to land next week, on August 18th, 2026. The retro tennis sneaker gets a timely upgrade with inspiration from the Air MAG sneaker designed for Back to the Future 2 in 1989. The mid-cut trainer comes in a flat grey color with teal and orange accents evoking the shoes and the movie’s logo. Pairs will be available through both the SNKRS app and select retailers for $180.
