Nike is teaming up with the MLB this year for a series of special sneaker releases tied to several teams’ City Connect alt jerseys. Today, we have an official look at the San Diego Padres’ pair, coming in May.
The new Major League Baseball season is officially underway this week. Many months of sunshine and baseball lie ahead of us, and what better way to celebrate than with special team-themed sneakers. Since signing their deal with the MLB in 2020, Nike has been hard at work cooking up special team gear, largely through City Connect jerseys, which take inspiration from each team’s local culture. This week, noted sneaker information guy @brandon1an shared an early look at an upcoming MLB x Nike project bringing the City Connect theme to sneakers. Official images of the San Diego Padres’ Air Max 1 show off a colorful take on the classic runner, which features Dia de los Muertos skulls on the insoles, a nod to the city’s Mexican culture. Dark Obsidian suede and leather make up the main panels, while bold pink & orange accents cover the rest of the shoe, all set over an off-white base layer.
