In 1991, Nike released the Air Huarache. Beloved by marathon runner due to its snug and lightweight fit, the shoe quickly became one of Nike’s most well-known. Now, thirty years after its launch, the Swoosh is celebrating the Huarache with a limited-edition reissue.

Nike’s Air Huarache running shoe first debuted in 1991, designed by the legend himself, Tinker Hatfield. The Huarache was a marvel in footwear engineering in ’91, due largely to the neoprene inner bootie that clung to your foot like the slalom water ski it was directly inspired by. Built for performance and comfort over distances, the Huarache’s form-fitting wearability and stability thanks to its numerous overlays quickly transitioned the silhouette from a performance masterpiece to a beloved lifestyle essential, the most common form for the retro silhouette today. Now, as we approach the anniversary of the Huarache’s original release, Nike appears to be preparing for a celebration of the classic runner, kicking off next month with the release of the original “Scream Green” color scheme. One of four colorways from the 1991 debut, the look adds blue and neon green accents to the Air Huarache’s underlays, mixing in well with the otherwise white upper.
