Nike debuted their React foam midsole technology last year on two of their standard basketball models. Now, the Swoosh is transitioning React into an everyday cushioning, set to premier on the Nike Epic React Flyknit.

Nike has held a large share of the sneaker market for years now. Their infamous Air Max technology revolutionized how and why people wore shoes, and with adidas having introduced their answer to Air, the Swoosh is ready to take back the sneaker market. Nike React foam was originally introduced on the Hyperdunk 2018 and Jordan Super.Fly 2017 silhouettes. Both shoes featured the new foam technology encased in a denser version of React to provide the stability and support needed on the basketball court. Now, Nike is removing the protective protective layer between foam and floor, and providing you with as much React foam as they can fit under a shoe. The sole is composed entirely of foam, no glue or other adhesives to hold different parts together. The sole is much taller, and extends past the wearer’s heel much farther than usual. This provides extra support and stability, as the foam is soft enough to allow the shoe to “bottom out”. One of the most interesting details of the shoe is Nike’s decision to use geometrically scaled pieces in constructing each shoe size. Typically, manufacturers will produce one sample size, then add or take away materials as needed to adjust for size. This process can sacrifice the performance or comfort of larger or smaller sizes, as the shoe is not built specifically for that size. For the Epic React Flyknit, Nike used geometric formulas to ensure that every detail on every shoe provides the same feel and performance standard for the customer. As an initial measurement, Nike has stated that the Epic React Flyknit weighs precisely 8.3 ounces in a size 10, which can be compared to the adidas Ultra Boost, weighing 11.7 ounces in a size 10.5. Expect this drastic loss of weight to greatly benefit the shoes performance and long-term wearability.
