Nike first introduced the Vapormax sole unit in 2017 with much success, and even earning a spot on many sneaker-of-the-year lists as well. Now, the Vapormax has begun to appear on classic Air models, namely with this new “Japan” Vapormax 97.

The Nike Air Max 97 saw a glorious retro and updated run last year, returning in three formats: OG, Premium, and Ultra. Each version gave different attributes to the shoe and altered the performance to reflect the name, notably the Ultra variation was lighter and featured a fitted Neoprene upper. For 2018, the Swoosh is cobbling together a bevy of new shoes with Vapormax soles and classic uppers, in a style reminiscent of the hybrid Jordan’s from a decade ago. The Nike Vapormax 97 combines the upper from the famed Air Max 97 with the new Vapormax unit, creating a new and interesting combination of retro and modern styling. The upper is lifted exactly from the AM97 OG, using mesh and synthetic materials in wavy layers on the upper. The black base contrasts the wolf-grey reflective lines running around the upper, with a neon yellow Swoosh on the lateral side just above the sole. The color scheme of this shoe is taken from a previously Japan-only 97 colorway, before the highly sought after sneaker received a worldwide release this year. The new Vapormax sole unit utilizes the same Volt Yellow color as the details on the upper, this time repurposing it for the clear plastic air bags. Black outsole plates are added for extra grip and durability.
