The adidas NMD is constantly going through new iterations, changing the look and materials for something new. This week, a new NMD_R1 has surfaced, commemorating the upcoming Chinese New Year in February.
adidas’s Chinese New Year footwear collections have always been a fan-favorite of collectors. Consisting of hot silhouettes in luxurious materials and colors, the project has used dozens of different Three Stripes silhouettes as canvasses before. This year, it appears they are going back to rehash a previously used silhouette: the NMD_R1. This year, the Three Stripes’ premier lifestyle silhouette will take on the legendary “CNY” theme.
2019’s adidas NMD_R1 “CNY” has already been making great impressions in the sneaker world. Beginning with an all-black base across the knit upper and extending to the Boost midsole, the shoe features a distinct armor-like pattern in the upper. The signature Three Stripes on either side come in a vibrant red tone, along with the tongue branding. The heel counters feature an embroidered dragon in red, orange, and green, which is also imprinted on the shoe’s insole.

The adidas NMD_R1 “Chinese New Year” is now slated to release on January 19th, 2018. The sleek new black and red look will likely retail slightly above the $130 price point, and release from both adidas and select retailers.
